The Delicious History of Stroopwafels and Their Journey to the UK

Luxury Stroopwafels
Stroopwafels, those irresistibly sweet and chewy treats, have gained immense popularity worldwide in recent years. Originating from the Netherlands, Stroopwafels have a rich and fascinating history that dates back centuries. In this blog post, we will take a delicious journey through time to explore the origins of Stroopwafels and discover how they have found their way into the hearts and stomachs of people across the globe, including the United Kingdom.

The Birth of Stroopwafels

Stroopwafels, translated as “syrup waffles,” were first created in the Dutch city of Gouda in the late 18th century. Originally a street food delicacy, they were the brainchild of a visionary baker looking to repurpose leftover ingredients. The traditional Stroopwafel is made by sandwiching a caramel-like syrup, or “stroop,” between two thin waffle layers. The combination of the crispy waffle and the sweet, gooey syrup created a taste sensation that quickly captured the hearts of the Dutch.

Evolution and Popularity

Initially, Stroopwafels were enjoyed by the working class as a special treat. However, as their popularity grew, so did the demand for these delightful waffles. The invention of a specialized Stroopwafel iron in the 19th century revolutionized their production, allowing for larger quantities to be made with greater ease. Stroopwafels soon became a staple at markets and festivals, captivating locals and tourists alike.

The Stroopwafel Goes Global

In recent decades, Stroopwafels have transcended their Dutch roots and gained international acclaim. Their unique flavor and texture have captivated taste buds across continents. Today, Stroopwafels are enjoyed as a beloved snack and a delightful accompaniment to coffee or tea.

Stroopwafels Arrive in the UK

Liam Neeson with Born and Raised waffles owner Michael HendersonA day in August I recieved an email enquiring about hiring one of our waffle trucks for a film shoot. I wasn’t sure what the movie was and treated it as any other enquiry I get as we have serverd waffles at many shoots including Game of Thrones, Nightflyers and even our MK1 has starred in an advertising shoot (I didn’t make the screen!). Annnnyyhoooo…..back to this enquiry…After a few emails I got a call on a Friday afternoon while our 3 year old was in his funny half hour and was attached to my leg and I’m trying to be serious…A lovely lady called Anna said that she was the one emailing and said she would like to book and also said it’s Liam Neeson booking us as a gift to the cast and crew as a thank you…WELL after Anna said Liam Neeson (while Micah my son is attached on my leg laughing) I almost fell over. As always privacy is very important for our clients and naturally I was asked not to say to anyone until after the event….I must confess I told my wife who was as excited as me if not more…I had 5 days to keep my mouth shut and oh my was I flippin excited. That weekend we already had a big event on with MK2 but MK1 was on standby ready for action. On Saturday morning almost 1am we arrived at our film shoot location in Belfast and ready to serve for 2am. After everyone had been fed we had cleaned the trailer down and waited to see if we could meet the man himself. 5am arrived and this huge guy came walking accross the carpark saying “everyone is raving about these waffles” WOW and WOOOW!! He really wanted to get a photo with me beacause of my waffley success (JOKE LOL)….While getting a photo with him I asked are you going to Ballymena? He said he was going up to visit his mum. I told him I lived in Ahoghill just outside Ballymena and he started asking me did I know this one and this guy….Not only did he give us great business which we appreaciate from all you guys too..but he loved to have a wee chat which I love the most about my job…I love a waffle more ways than one 🙂
